Yes, this is finally an update. Today I was able to get near a functioning scanner, and I thought I would post something a bit different. Lately, my inks have really been improving due to the new found confidence/patience/appreciation I have in the penciling stage. I've always appreciated the penciling stage, however I wasn't approaching it in the appropriate manner for my method of inking. It was very frustrating. I would always end up rendering information with my pencils that wouldn't be as evident in my inks. My pencils have always been loose, but I was concentrating too much on describing contour, when my inks many focus on describing shape. So, I felt like I was filling in a missing gap during the inking stage.
So, I started playing around with my approach.
Now I am using a giant 5.6 MM lead holder with a chiseled end. I mainly try to focus on mood, light, and shape in a very loose manner. This gives me just enough of the important information I need for my inks. With the brush, I then start to pull out the details. It has been really successful so far and has been the best process in terms of speed, quality, and enjoyment. The images above are are a good examples of how detailed I'm now taking my pencils. With the giant 5.6 MM pencil, I've been knocking images like these within my 10 minute limit. And yes... these are characters are from the Game of Thrones. I can't wait for it to come out in February! Winter's coming...
